Equation

Blight presented the Master Beach profile equation in 1994 (ref. 1).

The Master Profile Equation relates the beach elevation () at any location along the beach to:

The distance (chainage) along the beach ().

The total beach fall ().

The total beach length ().

A shape factor ().

Equation2: Master Profile Equation

Initial work by Blight suggested a constant beach shape factor, .

Subsequent work by McPhail suggests a variable shape factor, , as a function of the beach length, :

Notes:

A shape factor of less than one generates a convex beach.

A shape factor of more than one generates a concave beach.
