Dam Breach Modelling

Rift FD is a Finite Volume Dam Breach Model that was developed to facilitate modelling Newtonian and Non-Newtonian dam breach scenarios using Tailings Deposition Model results.

Rift FD is integrated into Rift TD but operates under a separate licence.

Use Rift FD to rapidly assess dam breach scenarios for various stages of tailings storage facility development.

Features

Rift FD's features include:

  • Newtonian and Non-Newtonian friction models
  • Detailed output, including flow velocities, flow depth, flow flux and Froude Number
  • The HLL Riemann Solver to solve normal fluxes at control volume faces
  • Linear reconstruction of gradients to improve model stability in distorted elements
  • A multi-dimensional limiter to suppress non-physical oscillations near discontinuities
  • An implicit scheme utilising a Taylor series expansion to solve the Friction terms

Model Output

The Finite Volume Model provides comprehensive output which includes:

  • Flow Depth
  • Flow velocities
  • Flow flux
  • Froude number

Saved dam breach surfaces can be loaded following the model run to view the beach extent.

Use the Digital Terrain Modelling Module to:

  • Extract a String around the inundation extent
  • Export Dam Breach surfaces to Google Earth
